WEB DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT / A PRACTICAL ANSWER
Should website content come before design?
The short answer
Important content decisions should begin before detailed page design, while copy and layouts can develop together. Designers need to understand the offer, hierarchy and realistic content length. Waiting until the end to replace placeholder text can uncover missing information or force an expensive rethink of the page structure.

What to agree
Prepare representative content for the journeys that matter most. This can be a service explanation, one product record and a genuine enquiry message rather than a finished draft of every page. Identify who checks facts and who has authority to approve claims.
How to decide
Use early layouts to test comprehension and sequence, then refine the wording in context. Treat content changes that alter the offer or page purpose differently from small edits. The project needs a shared approval point so copy and design do not keep reopening each other.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE / NOT A CLIENT RESULT
Make it concrete.
A hotel page designed around one photograph and a slogan may later need room capacity, access details and booking conditions. Discovering those requirements during planning produces a more useful layout than squeezing them into the footer.
Before you commission
- Agree the offer and page purpose first.
- Use realistic headings and content examples.
- Assign factual and editorial approval separately.
