WEB DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT / A PRACTICAL ANSWER
What is the difference between website maintenance and support?
The short answer
Website maintenance usually concerns keeping the agreed system operating, while support concerns helping people use it or resolve incidents. Providers define those terms differently. Ask what actions, response expectations and exclusions are actually included instead of assuming a monthly fee covers every update or urgent problem.

What to agree
Separate routine technical work, content edits, incident response and new feature development. Define the systems covered and the access the supplier needs. The agreement should explain how work is requested, prioritised and verified, including issues caused by third-party services.
How to decide
Check what happens outside normal availability and when the site grows beyond the original scope. A response acknowledgement is not the same as a guaranteed resolution. Establish how backups, handover and changes of supplier will work before relying on an ongoing arrangement.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE / NOT A CLIENT RESULT
Make it concrete.
A maintenance plan might update a publishing system but exclude rewriting service pages. A support agreement might help an editor publish an article but exclude a failed booking provider. Naming those boundaries prevents avoidable disputes.
Before you commission
- List the systems and tasks included.
- Distinguish response time from resolution.
- Confirm the route for urgent incidents and scope changes.
